Do I need a top plate to the rafters of a porch roof?
I'm building a gable roof on the porch of 10×26 with 6×6 corner posts. I 2×8 racing double corner posts at home. Is it necessary to run a lid on top of 2×8 beam to sit on – or can you just cut the bird's eye and beams are sitting directly on the 2×8 in the final. If you are sure that do not code in your area, then I say let common sense rule. If you can not find a good reason for an upper plate for his own use, and then go without it. That's what I'd do.
